She’s a harsh mistress.

So Tuesday was my 1st commute on the bike in like almost 2 weeks so of course, it rained. On the way home some sort of bottle exploded underneath my rear tire. I couldn’t see it in the dark. Flat. Dark. Too dark to fix it, plus I figured I’d never find all the shards in the tire and just puncture the new tube I’d put in so…..

No worries. I’ll call…..d’oh. Cell phone battery is dead.

I decided since the rim was already shot (this is the one with the huge ding it it) and I had on the big tires since the snow before my surgery….I’d ride home on the flat.

Thanks to the big monster Kujo DH tire on the rear, it actually went pretty well. I even made it up a few monster hills in the granny gear.

In stark contrast, yesterday’s ride in and home was very pleasant. It wasn’t too cold, the winter shoes are feeling better with each wearing and nothing broke. Bonus.

I slacked and drove in today since I had an am appointment and some errands to run.

In the ever evolving bike quiver things are shaping up. The Schwinn that Nature sent is getting a new headset soon and I think I may have it built up within a week.

I also may have been premature in my eulogy of the Ubaldmobile, as I’ve been doing some research and I may be able to get a different bottom bracket to work or may even be able to rethread the frame. Pete has offered his services to see what we can do this weekend. Stay tuned….

We’re getting all set to go for Lyn’s immigration interview at the end of the month. Hopefully things will go well. I think there’s a test on Seinfeld trivia to see if you can get in or not.

I recently contacted one of my blogging superheros and he has graciously offered to help me out with some hi-tech career oriented questions. Now I just have to figure out how to get my own technolgy to work. I don’t have a mic on my computer and he actually wanted to SPEAK to me…imagine that – in this day and age…someone wanting to talk. Go figure. You mean I can’t email/text message you on your Blackberry so you can fax me from the car? I’ve never really gone down that road – still sort of partial to the tin cans and string if you ask me. More ambiance. Thanks Theron for your response – I’ll get back to you as soon as I can get my act together…

Owt.

Project lemonMerchant.

Before you ask, it’s a veiled Ren ‘n Stimpy reference. If you don’t get it, don’t worry about it, only like 3 people will.

I mentioned earlier that my good man Nature had sent me a care package that included a frame some choice parts to build up a replacement for my old commuter. Well, here ’tis.

Doesn't look like much. Yet.

It will be graced with drop bars and only one gear baby, and will be badass. Complete build pictures to follow.

So far my biggest stumbling block has been the locating of a headset that fits the sucker.

That and I can’t find the bottom bracket that he sent with it, I’ve misplaced it somewhere. It’s quite possible that I’m loosing my mind.

A comrade falls:The Ubaldmobile, R.I.P. 2005

Taken too soon...

Alas another fallen soldier.

The bike that was only weeks ago to carry me to greatness in the Tour of Hope has been silenced forever.

Observe I have taken the traditions passed on to me and have poured a pint in it’s memory.

Last week the bottom bracket came loose during a ride, unbeknownst to me, and by the time I realized – the damage was done. The bottom bracket threads had stripped, thus ending it’s illustrious career.

I feel as the mechanic I must shoulder some of the blame for perhaps better maintenance would have identitifed the potential hazard sooner. Sorry I let you down old pal.

He will be missed.

It is in tribute that I announce the launch of project:lemonMerchant.

project:lemonMerchant will be the project bike that will be the replacement for the Ubaldmobile that I will build up from scratch – well, almost from scratch. Nature has signed on to build me a badass set of bomb proof wheels for the final product and I have agreed to let him do it as it will bring infinite good mojo to the bike. Stay tuned for details of the project.

Let us take a moment to remember this valiant steed taken from us too soon….

Note: It should be pointed out that contrary to rumors circulating the web, this was indeed a random and unfortunate accident, and NOT an act of sabotage carried out by a disgruntled former team buKit tool/technician as some internet news sources are reporting.

Furnace II: The Quagmire Strikes Back

Hey all. Been slacking on the updates.

It looks like Nature is coming back next week. He has some business in town, but of course won’t go without the riding. Of course he’s already expressed interest in returning to the Furnace. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t eager to return as well. Fun. Fun. Should be interesting. Perhaps I’ll run into ‘Stan’ out there – I heard through his mouthpiece, Andy, that he’s back in country after some time abroad. We’ll see what happens.

My sistor is coming into town next week as well.

I’m debating some sort of gathering and hoping to get some folks together. We’ll see what materializes.

That’s it for now.

Oh, and I almost forgot, Stan’s replacement arrived yesterday. Thanks again to Mom.
